Redactionele duiding

Government troops under the Duke of Cumberland routed a smaller, exhausted Jacobite army in a battle that lasted barely 40 minutes but whose aftermath — including a harsh campaign against Highland clans and culture — reshaped the region for generations. The moor is designated as a registered historic battlefield by Historic Environment Scotland (Inventory reference BTL6), a status recognizing its national significance and helping protect it from inappropriate development. The National Trust for Scotland manages the site and its visitor centre, which draws on archaeological finds and clan muster rolls to reconstruct the events of the day.

Aanbeveling

Waymarked paths across the moor, flags marking each side's front lines, and a visitor centre built directly on the field let visitors walk the ground clan by clan and follow the battle almost minute by minute.
