On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite rising was crushed in under an hour on Culloden Moor, the last pitched battle fought on British soil and the end of Charles Edward Stuart's bid for the throne.

Government troops under the Duke of Cumberland routed a smaller, exhausted Jacobite army in a battle that lasted barely 40 minutes but whose aftermath — including a harsh campaign against Highland clans and culture — reshaped the region for generations. The moor is designated as a registered historic battlefield by Historic Environment Scotland (Inventory reference BTL6), a status recognizing its national significance and helping protect it from inappropriate development. The National Trust for Scotland manages the site and its visitor centre, which draws on archaeological finds and clan muster rolls to reconstruct the events of the day.
