On 6 June 1944, Allied forces landed along roughly 80 kilometres of the Normandy coast in the largest seaborne invasion in history, opening the Western Front against Nazi Germany.

The site spans six locations along the Normandy coast: Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Gold Beach, Juno Beach, Sword Beach, and Pointe du Hoc. On 26 July 2026, UNESCO inscribed the 'Beaches of the D-Day Landings, Normandy, 1944' on the World Heritage List, under reference 1581, meeting criterion (vi). The inscribed core zone covers 4,228.68 hectares with a buffer zone of 294,749 hectares; UNESCO's own listing does not publish exact coordinates for each individual beach. No separate French Monument Historique record specific to Pointe du Hoc, Omaha, or Utah Beach has been found to date.
